Harnessing the Sun: 7th Grade Scientists Build Solar Ovens and Explore Electromagnetic Energy
Students explore electromagnetic energy through hands on engineering and solar oven design
Seventh-grade science students recently combined creativity, engineering, and scientific inquiry in a hands-on project that brought the heat by designing and building pizza box solar ovens. The activity allowed students to explore the electromagnetic spectrum while applying engineering design standards to solve a real-world problem: harnessing sunlight as a sustainable energy source.
As part of their unit on electromagnetic radiation, students learned that sunlight is a form of energy that travels in waves across the electromagnetic spectrum. They focused on visible light and infrared radiation, which play an important role in heating objects. Through investigation, students discovered how solar energy can be absorbed, reflected, and trapped to increase temperature.
Using simple materials such as pizza boxes, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, and black construction paper, students engineered ovens that capture and concentrate solar energy. Aluminum foil helped reflect sunlight into the box, while plastic wrap created an insulating layer to trap heat. These designs demonstrated how energy transfer and electromagnetic waves can be used in practical ways.
After constructing and testing their ovens, students were rewarded with a memorable experience: making s’mores on a sunny day. As marshmallows melted and chocolate softened, students saw firsthand how their designs transferred and retained solar energy.
This engaging project strengthened students’ understanding of physical science concepts while also building collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Through innovation and inquiry, seventh-grade scientists showed that with the right design and a little sunshine, learning can be both illuminating and delicious.
