ABMF Past Is Prologue Essay Contest Now Open
Students ages 11 to 18 can submit essays on the France and America alliance for a chance to win up to $10,000
The 2026 Past Is Prologue Essay Contest is now open for submissions. This annual national competition invites students ages 11 to 18 to examine pivotal moments in American military history and reflect on how those lessons continue to shape our nation and their own lives today. Given the unique perspective of DoWEA students, this contest offers a meaningful way to connect classroom learning with personal history and global awareness.
In honor of the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, students are asked to examine the alliance with France during one of the following historical periods: the American Revolution, the post-Revolution through post-Civil War period, World War I with the Battle of the Meuse-Argonne, or World War II with Operation Overlord. Students must analyze the historical significance of their chosen event and explain how its lessons remain relevant to their own lives and future.
Key details include a deadline of May 3, 2026, at 10:00 p.m. MDT and digital submission using a unique Participant ID, with student names not appearing on the essay. Scholarship awards are $ 10,000 for first place, $ 5,000 for second place, and $ 2,500 for third place. Winning essays will be announced on September 27 on Gold Star Mothers’ and Families’ Day.
Essay requirements include 12-point Times New Roman font, 1-inch margins, double spacing, and a header that includes Participant ID, title, date, word count, and page number with no student names. Essays should emphasize historical accuracy, original analysis, and personal reflection. Students can apply and submit through www.ABMF.org.
